Wayanad Backpacking Trip from Mumbai
Overview
Wayanad is Kerala at its most raw — a highland district where the Western Ghats unfold into dense forests, sprawling spice plantations, and rock formations that date back 3,000 years. This trip covers the region's best over a relaxed long weekend: wildlife spotting at Muthanga or Tholpetty, a hike to the stunning Meenmutty and Soochipara waterfalls, a walk through the Edakkal Caves with their Neolithic petroglyphs, and sunrise over the Chembra Peak's heart-shaped lake.
The pace is easy — short walks and drives between destinations, plenty of time to sit with a cup of freshly ground coffee at a plantation stay. Wayanad is also one of India's best regions for spotting wild elephants, sambar deer, and a remarkable variety of birds.
We travel from Mumbai by overnight train to Kozhikode (Calicut), then drive up into the hills. The return is via Kozhikode on day four. This is a trip for anyone who wants Kerala beyond the backwaters — cool air, green hills, and some of the best coffee you will ever drink.
Based in Wayanad, this easy 4-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
How do I get to Wayanad from Mumbai?
We travel by overnight train from Mumbai to Kozhikode (Calicut), followed by a 2.5-hour drive up into the Wayanad hills. The train details are provided after booking. Return is via the same route on day 4.
Is the Chembra Peak trek included in the itinerary?
The hike to the heart-shaped lake on Chembra Peak is optional — it is a 3-km trek with moderate elevation gain. Those who prefer a relaxed day can instead spend the afternoon at the plantation or explore local markets. Your trip leader will help arrange the trek for those interested.
What wildlife can I expect to see in Wayanad?
Muthanga and Tholpetty sanctuaries are home to wild elephants, gaurs (Indian bison), sambar deer, langurs, and a wide variety of birds including hornbills and drongos. Leopards and tigers are present but rarely spotted. Early morning safaris offer the best sightings.
What is the food like in Wayanad?
Wayanad offers excellent Kerala cuisine — puttu and kadala curry, appams, fish curry, and banana fritters. Plantation stays often serve home-cooked meals using ingredients grown on the estate. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are both widely available.
What should I pack for this trip?
Light cotton clothing for daytime, a light jacket or sweater for evenings (the hills can get cool), comfortable walking shoes, a rain jacket (unpredictable mountain weather), insect repellent, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Binoculars are useful for wildlife spotting.
