Coorg Backpacking Trip from Mumbai
Overview
Coorg (Kodagu) is Karnataka's most beautiful hill district — a landscape of rolling coffee plantations, misty mountain ridges, and dense forests that feel a world away from the bustle of Mumbai. This trip is built around slow mornings on plantation stays, short hikes to waterfalls, and the distinctive culture of the Kodava people.
Over four days, we cover the region's highlights: a visit to the Dubare Elephant Camp for a river bath with the elephants, a hike through coffee estates to Abbey Falls, a spice plantation walk, and a day in the Tibetan settlement of Bylakuppe with its massive monastery. For those who want more, there is the option of an early-morning trek up Tadiandamol, Coorg's highest peak.
Coorg is best explored at a relaxed pace — good food (Pandhi curry, Akki Roti, and fresh coffee at every stop), cool weather even in summer, and some of the warmest hospitality in South India. We travel from Mumbai by overnight train to Mysore or Mangalore, then drive up into the hills.
Based in Coorg, this easy 4-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
How do I reach Coorg from Mumbai?
We travel by overnight train from Mumbai to Mysore (or Mangalore), followed by a 2.5-hour drive into Coorg's hill country. The exact train details are shared after booking. Return is via the same route on day 4.
Is the Dubare Elephant Camp ethical?
Dubare is operated by the Karnataka Forest Department and focuses on conservation, education, and mahout training. Activities include river bathing, feeding, and observing the elephants in a natural riverside setting. Riding is not part of the experience.
What is the weather like in Coorg?
Coorg stays pleasant year-round. Daytime temperatures range from 20-28°C and evenings can drop to 15°C. October to March is the best season — clear skies, cool air, and lush green landscapes. Carry a light jacket or sweater for evenings.
Can I buy coffee directly from the plantation?
Yes! Most plantation stays sell their own estate-grown coffee — both beans and ground powder. You can buy freshly roasted Coorg coffee directly from the host at prices far lower than city stores. We recommend carrying some back.
What should I carry for this trip?
Comfortable walking shoes, light layers and a sweater for evenings, a rain jacket, swimwear for the elephant bath at Dubare, insect repellent, sunscreen, a camera, and a reusable water bottle. The plantation stays are casual — no formal wear needed.
