Chikmagalur Coffee Plantation Trip
Overview
The Chikmagalur Trip from Mumbai takes you to the coffee land of Karnataka, where some of India's finest Arabica and Robusta beans are grown. Spread across the foothills of the Mullayanagiri range (Karnataka's highest peak), the region is a lush green paradise of coffee estates, spice gardens, and misty mountain trails.
This 3-day trip is designed for slow, immersive travel — stay on a working coffee plantation, wake up to the aroma of fresh-roasted beans, walk through pepper vines and cardamom plants, trek to Mullayanagiri for sunrise views, and cool off at Jhari Falls (also known as Buttermilk Falls).
The journey from Mumbai is via overnight train to Mangalore or Hassan, with a scenic drive into the hills.
Chikmagalur holds a special place in Indian history — legend says the first coffee seeds in the country were smuggled in by the Sufi saint Baba Budan and planted in the hills just north of the town, which still bear his name (Baba Budangiri). Today the district's estates produce some of the finest Arabica in India, and the surrounding Bababudan range, Kudremukh and Mullayanagiri offer some of the most scenic drives in Karnataka.
The region is also rich in birdlife and forested valleys, making every walk a small adventure in itself. Mornings are crisp and misty, afternoons warm and drowsy under the coffee shade, and evenings are perfect for sitting on a plantation veranda with a cup of freshly brewed filter coffee.
Based in Karnataka, this easy 3-day trek is best attempted during September, October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
How do I reach Chikmagalur from Mumbai?
We travel by overnight train from Mumbai to Mangalore or Hassan, followed by a 2-3 hour drive through coffee estates into Chikmagalur. Train details are shared after booking.
What is a plantation stay like?
You stay in a heritage bungalow converted into a guesthouse on a working coffee estate. Rooms are simple but comfortable with colonial-era furniture. Meals are home-cooked using ingredients from the estate. You can walk through the coffee, pepper, and cardamom plantations anytime.
Can I buy coffee directly from the plantation?
Yes — most estates sell their own coffee beans. You can buy fresh-roasted Arabica and Robusta at prices much lower than city stores. We recommend carrying back a few packets.
Is the Mullayanagiri trek difficult?
The trek is 4 km one way with moderate elevation gain. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the top. The trail passes through grassy slopes with panoramic views. The last section is a bit steep but manageable for anyone with basic fitness.
What is the best time to visit Chikmagalur?
September to May is ideal. September-December offers lush green landscapes after the monsoon. January-March is perfect for clear mountain views. April-May is warmer but still pleasant in the hills. Monsoon (June-August) brings heavy rain and slippery trails.
