Heritage Trip to Aurangabad
Overview
Aurangabad is the gateway to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites — the Ajanta Caves (rock-cut Buddhist caves famous for their murals), the Ellora Caves (a remarkable complex of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain rock-cut monuments), and the nearby Daulatabad Fort. This weekend trip covers all three, along with a stop at Bibi ka Maqbara (the 'Mini Taj') and a walk through the old city's Mughal-era streets. The Ajanta and Ellora caves are each a full day on their own, so the itinerary is paced to give both sites the time they deserve without rushing.
Based in Marathwada, this easy 2-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
Are Ajanta and Ellora caves on the same day?
No. Ajanta and Ellora are about 100 km apart, and each site requires at least half a day to see properly. We dedicate Day 1 to Ellora (closer to Aurangabad city) and Day 2 to Ajanta (a 2-hour drive each way). Trying to do both in one day would mean rushing through both.
What is the best way to reach Aurangabad from Mumbai?
The fastest option is a 1-hour flight from Mumbai to Aurangabad (multiple daily flights). Alternately, overnight trains (like the Tapovan Express or Devagiri Express) take about 7-8 hours. The trip price does not include transport to Aurangabad.
Are the cave interiors dark — do I need a torch?
Some caves are quite dark, especially the deeper Buddhist chaitya halls at Ajanta where the famous murals are. The guide carries a flashlight, and some caves now have subtle lighting, but carrying your own small torch is recommended for seeing the paintings clearly.
Is photography allowed inside the caves?
Still photography is allowed with a basic ticket, but tripods and flash are not permitted inside the caves (flash damages the ancient murals at Ajanta). Video cameras require a separate fee. Smartphone cameras are usually fine. Rules are enforced by the ASI staff on site.
What is the best season for this trip?
October to March is ideal — the weather is pleasant for walking between caves. Summers (April-June) are very hot (40°C+), making the site visits tiring. Monsoon (July-September) brings greenery but also leeches on the Ajanta trails and occasional road closures.
