Munnar & Alleppey Trip
Overview
This munnar alleppey trip from mumbai showcases Kerala — God's Own Country — at its finest: the rolling tea plantations of Munnar and the serene backwaters of Alleppey, packed into a 5-day itinerary.
Munnar, at 1,600 metres, is a sprawling tea country with endless green carpets draped over the Western Ghats. Walk through tea estates, visit a tea museum, spot Nilgiri tahrs at Eravikulam National Park, and hike to Attukal or Lakkam Waterfalls.
Alleppey offers a complete contrast — a quiet houseboat cruise through the famous backwaters, past paddy fields, coconut groves, and village life unfolding on the water's edge. We spend a night on a traditional kettuvallam houseboat with freshly cooked Kerala seafood.
The journey to Kerala is via overnight train from Mumbai to Ernakulam or Aluva.
Between the misty hills and the backwaters, the trip also covers the quieter side of Kerala — spice markets, coir villages, and the Alappuzha lighthouse. Whether you are watching the sun rise over the tea valleys or drifting past paddy fields on the houseboat deck, this is a journey built around slow, immersive travel. All accommodation, transfers, breakfasts, the overnight houseboat cruise with dinner, and park entry fees are handled, so you can simply soak in the two very different faces of God's Own Country. It works equally well for couples, families, and solo travellers looking for a well-paced Kerala holiday.
Based in Kerala, this easy 5-day trek is best attempted during September, October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
How do I get to Kerala for the Munnar Alleppey trip from Mumbai?
We travel by overnight train from Mumbai to Ernakulam or Aluva. The train departs in the evening and arrives the next morning. From the station, we drive 4 hours through scenic hill roads to Munnar.
What is the houseboat experience like?
The houseboat (kettuvallam) is a traditional Kerala rice barge converted into a floating cottage — with bedrooms, a living area, and an open deck. The boat drifts through the backwaters at a leisurely pace. A crew of three (captain, cook, and assistant) takes care of everything. Dinner is freshly cooked Kerala cuisine.
Is the houseboat safe for families with children?
Yes — houseboats are completely safe, with railings on all sides and life jackets available. Children love watching the village life, birds, and other boats pass by. The calm backwaters have no waves.
What is the weather like in Munnar?
Munnar is cool year-round (15-25°C). Evenings can drop to 10-12°C in winter (Nov-Feb). The monsoon (Jun-Sep) brings heavy rain but also makes the tea gardens incredibly green. Pack a light jacket regardless of the season.
What food should I try in Kerala?
A full Kerala sadya (banana leaf meal) is a must — rice, sambar, avial, thoran, and payasam. Seafood is excellent — karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish), prawn curry, and squid fry. Finish with tender coconut water and Kerala-style black tea.
