Pawna Lakeside Camping

Overview

Pawna Lake is an artificial reservoir created by the Pawna Dam, set against the backdrop of the Sahyadri hill ranges near Lonavala and Khandala. The lakeshore has become one of the most popular camping spots near Mumbai and Pune, offering wide, flat campsites with uninterrupted views of the water and the hills beyond. This is a relaxed, no-walk weekend — you drive straight to the campsite, spend the afternoon lounging by the lake or trying kayaking, and gather around the bonfire as the sun sets behind the hills. The campsites are basic but comfortable, with tents pitched on the grass right by the water's edge.

Based in Maharashtra, this easy 2-day trek is best attempted during July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

Is Pawna Lake safe for swimming and kayaking?

Yes, the lake is generally calm and safe for swimming near the shore and for kayaking in the designated area. Life jackets are provided for kayaking. The lake is a reservoir, not a natural water body, so there are no strong currents or tides.

What is the washroom situation at the campsite?

Campsites at Pawna have basic temporary washroom tents with portable toilets and bucket baths. They are not luxury facilities but are maintained hygienically for the duration of your stay. If you need hot water, it can be arranged on request.

How do I reach Pawna Lake from Mumbai or Pune?

Pawna Lake is about 1.5 hours from both Mumbai (via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, exit at Lonavala) and Pune (via the expressway or the old Pune-Mumbai highway). Driving your own vehicle is the most convenient option. Carpool coordination can be arranged if you do not have transport.

Is the campsite private or shared with other groups?

The lakeshore has multiple camping operators with designated zones. You will have your own section with your group's tents and bonfire area. However, the beach is not completely private — you may see other camping groups at a distance, especially on weekends.

What happens if it rains during the camping?

Light rain during monsoon camping is common and often adds to the experience. The tents are waterproof, and we have a covered dining area. In case of heavy rain or a forecast of extreme weather, we will inform you in advance and offer a reschedule or full refund.
