Garbett Plateau Trek

4.6 (5 reviews)

Overview

Garbett Plateau is one of the most loved easy treks near Mumbai — a vast, grassy highland on the eastern edge of the Matheran range, reached on a scenic forest trail that starts beside Dhom Lake. It was first mapped as a viewpoint in 1850 by the collector of Thane district, and more than 170 years later the summit still delivers one of the widest panoramas in the region: rolling green grassland opening to 360-degree views over the Sahyadri valleys, the Matheran hill station and, on clear days, all the way to the Konkan coast.

The walk begins at Dhom Lake near the base village of Diksal, about 70 km from Mumbai. In the monsoon the trailhead has its own waterfall spilling beside the path, and the first easy section runs through open forest to the little village of Sagachiwadi — roughly the halfway mark, where we stop for a breather. From here the trail turns into a steady, steeper climb for about 1.5 hours before levelling out onto the plateau. After soaking in the views from Garbett Point at 2,625 ft, we walk the final easy stretch across the grassland, then descend towards Matheran's Dasturi Naka, where transport collects us for the drive home.

Departing early morning from Mumbai or Pune, we complete the whole trek in a single day. The trail is well marked and rated Easy, making it a superb first monsoon trek for beginners and families — the only real effort is the one steady climb out of Sagachiwadi.

Best visited in the monsoon and post-monsoon months (June to December), when the plateau turns a brilliant green and the views are at their clearest, Garbett Plateau is a classic one-day escape into the Sahyadris.

Based in Matheran, this easy 1-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October, November, December — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
