Matheran Night Trek
Overview
Matheran is Asia's only automobile-free hill station, and the best way to arrive is on foot at night. This trek starts late evening from Neral village, following the forest trail up through the dark under a canopy of stars (or a full moon, if you time it right). The walk is gentle and the trail well-defined, climbing gradually through the dark forest with occasional clearings that reveal the twinkling lights of the plains below. You reach Matheran just before dawn, in time to walk out to Panorama Point or Louisa Point and watch the sunrise over the Sahyadri range, with a well-earned breakfast waiting in the hill station's quiet morning air.
Based in Matheran, this easy 1-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March, April — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
Is the night trail to Matheran safe?
Yes. The trail is well-defined and used regularly by trekkers. Our guides are experienced with night navigation, and everyone carries a headlamp. The gradient is gentle, and there are no dangerous cliff-edge sections. We maintain a group pace and do regular headcounts.
What time do we start the trek?
We usually assemble at Neral station between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM. The trek takes about 3-4 hours, so we reach Matheran around 2:00-3:00 AM, wait for sunrise at a viewpoint, and then head for breakfast.
Can I take the toy train back instead of walking down?
Yes. After the trek and breakfast, you have free time in Matheran. You can take the toy train back to Neral (the train schedule varies — we can check current timings on the day) or share a cab back down. The cost of the train or cab is not included in the trek fee.
What should I carry for a night trek?
A headlamp or torch is mandatory (phone flashlights are not sufficient). Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip, carry 1 litre of water, some snacks, and a light jacket — it gets cooler at night, especially post-monsoon. We recommend wearing full-length pants for the forest sections.
Is this suitable for first-time trekkers?
Yes, the gradient is easy and the distance is manageable (about 5 km uphill). Anyone with basic fitness who can walk for 3-4 hours continuously can do this trek. However, if you have vertigo or are uncomfortable walking in the dark, a daytime trek might be a better fit.
