Matheran Trip from Ahmedabad, Vadodara & Surat
Overview
Matheran is Asia's only car-free hill station — a green, 800-metre-high plateau in the Sahyadris where the loudest thing you will hear is birdsong and the whistle of the 1907 toy train. This 2-day trip from Gujarat swaps the buzz of Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat for a weekend of unhurried forest walks, breezy viewpoints and old-world charm.
The moment you step out at Dasturi Naka, cars give way to footpaths, hand-pulled rickshaws and horses. We settle you into a comfortable stay in the heart of the hill station, then head out the same evening for the classic circuit: Charlotte Lake, Echo Point and Sunset Point, with the Khandala–Lonavala range laid out far below. The night air is cool and silent — a genuine escape from the plains.
Day two is the highlight for most travellers: a dawn walk to Panorama Point or Louisa Point for the sunrise over the Sahyadri ridge, followed by a ride on the little narrow-gauge toy train (Matheran to Neral) — a UNESCO-nominated heritage line that hugs the hill edge through dense forest. Time permitting, we take in the tiny market, the Lord Ganesh temple and a few more viewpoints before the drive back to Gujarat, arriving late night.
The trip is rated Easy — mostly flat walking on made paths, ideal for families, couples and first-time hill-station visitors. It runs on weekend departures through the cool season (October to March), with transport, one night's stay, breakfast and a trip leader included. From the pickups in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat to the farewell drop, everything is arranged — you just have to show up.
Based in Matheran, this easy 3-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
