One Tree Hill Matheran Trek

Overview

One Tree Hill is one of Matheran's quieter viewpoints, sitting apart from the busy main market area at the far end of the hill station. Unlike the crowded Panorama or Louisa points, it is reached by a peaceful forest path, with a single landmark tree standing alone on a grassy knoll — the view beyond sweeps over the Sahyadri valleys that ring Matheran on every side. It is the perfect vantage for a calm sunrise or a late-afternoon stroll, and it sees a fraction of the crowd.

The most scenic way to reach it is on foot from Neral — the classic approach up Matheran's forested southern slopes. The trail climbs gently through jungle, crosses the toy-train track near the top, and reaches the One Tree Hill area in about 3 hours. There is no steep scrambling; it is a steady, shaded walk that suits beginners and casual hikers, with the option to continue into the main Matheran market for a snack before returning.

Departing early morning from Mumbai or Pune, we drive to Neral station, trek up to One Tree Hill and the surrounding viewpoints, spend time at the summit, and return the same day — either walking back down or taking the toy train or a shared cab from Matheran. It is Asia's only automobile-free hill station, so the whole day is quiet and pollution-free.

Best visited from October to April when the skies are clear and the hills are at their greenest (or misty on brief winter mornings), the One Tree Hill trek is a gentle one-day escape into the Sahyadris that pairs well with Matheran's other viewpoints and short forest walks.
