Odisha Trip from Mumbai: Puri, Konark & Chilika Lake
Overview
Odisha is one of India's most underrated states — home to ancient temples, pristine beaches, and Asia's largest brackish water lagoon. This 4-day Odisha trip from Mumbai covers three of its most iconic destinations.
Puri is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and home to the 12th-century Jagannath Temple. Beyond its religious significance, Puri also offers a long golden beach perfect for sunrise walks and fresh seafood.
Konark's Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a 13th-century chariot-shaped temple carved from stone, with 24 massive wheels and intricate erotic sculptures that rival Khajuraho.
Chilika Lake is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon and a birder's paradise — home to Irrawaddy dolphins, migratory birds, and floating islands.
We travel from Mumbai by overnight train to Bhubaneswar or Puri.
Odisha's coastal culture runs deep — the Odissi dance form was born in the temple towns, and the state's silver filigree and appliqué crafts are prized across India. Seafood is a highlight of the region: fresh prawns, crabs, and fish from the Bay of Bengal are served in beachside shacks, and the local sweets are a must-try. Beyond the monuments, this is a state where tradition is very much alive in daily life.
This Odisha trip from Mumbai includes 3 nights of accommodation, breakfast daily, the Chilika Lake boat cruise, all monument entry fees, and inter-city transfers — priced at ₹10,999. Departures run in the cooler months from October to March, and you can book directly through Mumbai Weekenders on WhatsApp at 916351771180.

FAQs
How do I reach Odisha from Mumbai?
We travel by overnight train from Mumbai to Bhubaneswar or Puri. The train departs in the evening and arrives the next morning. From the station, we drive to Konark (1 hour for Bhubaneswar, 30 min from Puri).
Is non-Hindu entry allowed at Jagannath Temple?
Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the main Jagannath Temple. However, you can view the temple from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite the temple, or visit the Jagannath Temple Museum. The temple's architecture and the surrounding bazaar are equally fascinating.
What is the Sun Temple at Konark known for?
Built in the 13th century, the Sun Temple is shaped like a 24-wheel chariot drawn by 7 horses. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple's erotic sculptures (mithun) cover the outer walls. The sound and light show in the evening tells the temple's story beautifully.
What wildlife can I see at Chilika Lake?
Chilika is famous for Irrawaddy dolphins — a rare species found only here and in Southeast Asia. In winter (Nov-Feb), the lake hosts over 160 species of migratory birds — flamingos, pelicans, herons, and ducks. Bird Island is a key stop on the boat cruise.
What is the best time to visit Odisha?
October to March is ideal — cool, dry weather perfect for sightseeing. April-June is very hot (35-40°C in Puri). July-September is monsoon season with heavy rain. The Konark Dance Festival (Feb 1-5) and Puri's Rath Yatra (June-July) are great times to visit if you plan ahead.
