Salher Salota Range Trek

4.8 (11 reviews)

Overview

Salher is the highest fort in Maharashtra at 5,175 feet, and together with its twin, Salota, it forms one of the most spectacular range treks in the Sahyadris. The forts stand on the Selbari–Dolbari hills near the Maharashtra–Gujarat border in the Baglan region of Nashik district, about 280 km from Mumbai.

Day one climbs from the base village of Waghambe (or Salher Wadi) through rock-cut steps and dense forest to the col, then steeply up to the Salher summit — about 5 km and 3.5 hours. The top has a pond, a Parshuram temple and vast flat ground ideal for camping, with a 360-degree panorama that on a clear day stretches into Gujarat. Day two crosses the col to Salota Fort (4,986 ft), the sister peak, before the long descent back.

The Salher–Salota trek is steeped in history — the Battle of Salher in 1672 was the first open-field battle the Marathas won against the Mughals, and the loot from Surat is said to have passed through here on its way to the Maratha capital. Along the way you pass a line of mysterious rock-cut caves and ruins from the Maratha era.

This is a challenging, moderate-to-difficult trek suited to fit trekkers with some experience. The best season is October to March, when the skies are clear and the highest-fort panorama is at its finest.

Based in Nashik, this difficult 2-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
