Torna Fort Trek

4.1 (2 reviews)

Overview

Torna Fort Trek from Mumbai takes you to Torna, the highest fort in the Pune district at 1,403 m, steeped in Maratha history as the very first fort conquered by Shivaji Maharaj at the age of 16. This sprawling hill fort features massive stone walls, ancient gateways, several water cisterns, and the iconic Bini Darwaza, a needle-thin opening in the rock. The panoramic views from the top — encompassing Rajgad, Sinhagad, and the entire Sahyadri spine — make the challenging climb absolutely worth it.

The trek begins with an early 05:00 departure from Mumbai, with pickup points at Andheri, Dadar, Thane, and Vashi. You reach the Velhe base village around 09:00 for breakfast and a briefing, then start the climb along the main route through steep forest trails. The summit is reached around 12:30, leaving plenty of time to explore the fortifications and enjoy lunch at the top before beginning the descent at 14:30. The group is back at the base village by 17:00 and departs for Mumbai at 17:30, arriving around 21:30.

Rated Moderate, this one-day trek suits trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness and is one of the most rewarding one-day fort treks near Mumbai. Carry sturdy trekking shoes with deep grip, at least three litres of water, a packed lunch, and a torch for the early start. They are comparable in difficulty. Torna has a slightly longer approach but Rajgad has steeper sections. On the Torna Fort Trek from Mumbai, most trekkers do both on separate weekends.

Best time to visit?

Oct–Feb offers clear, cool weather. Monsoon makes the trail slippery and leech-infested. Summer is very hot.

Can Torna and Rajgad be combined?

They can be connected by a ridge trail, but it's an advanced 2-day expedition requiring good navigation skills.
