Rajgad Fort Trek
Overview
The Rajgad Fort — literally "King of Forts" — was the first capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Perched at 1,376 m in the Sahyadris, this massive plateau fort offers a breathtaking 360° panorama of the surrounding ranges — including the neighbouring Torna, Sinhagad, and the distant Konkan coast. The trek is a perfect blend of history, adventure, and sweeping landscapes, making it one of the most rewarding weekend treks from Mumbai.
Captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj early in his career, Rajgad served as the capital of the Maratha Empire for nearly 26 years before the court shifted to Raigad, and the fort's vast plateau remains a walking museum of that era — ruined palaces, the Sanctorum (Samadhi), and a network of rock-cut water cisterns that kept the fort self-sufficient. The trek routes themselves are heritage trails: the Chor Darwaza climb is steep and direct, while the Pali Darwaza descent winds through forest on gentler grades.
From the Suvela Machi plateau the horizon stretches to the neighbouring forts of Torna, Sinhagad, Purandar and Vajragad, and on clear post-monsoon days the sea glints toward the Konkan coast. Overnight campers on the vast Suvela plateau wake to a sunrise that turns the whole range golden. At just under 1,400 metres, Rajgad remains one of the most rewarding day-treks in the Sahyadris, and the Rajgad Fort Trek from Mumbai packs history, views and a genuine mountain workout into a single day.
Based in Maharashtra, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during February, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
