Rajgad to Torna Range Trek
Overview
The Rajgad to Torna range trek is a walk through the very birthplace of the Maratha empire. You start at Rajgad, the formidable fort that served as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's capital for 25 years before Raigad, with its three great machis — Padmavati, Suvela and Sanjeevani — radiating from the central Ballekilla. From there you follow the ancient ridge line across the mountains to Torna, the highest fort in Pune district at 4,603 feet, and the very first fort Shivaji captured at the age of 16 — the beginning of Hindavi Swarajya.
The traverse covers 15–18 km of point-to-point walking: steep ascents through forest, then a long, exposed ridge walk via Sanjeevani Machi and Budhla Machi with continuous panoramic views of the Sahyadris, before the final climb to Torna and the descent to the Velhe side. Most trekkers split it over two days, camping or staying at the fort temples, to enjoy the sunrise from Suvela Machi and the vast empty landscapes.
This is a medium-difficulty trek suited to fit, moderately experienced trekkers — the distance and the exposed, windy ridge demand good stamina and balance. The best season is June to February, when the hills are green and the weather is cool.
Based in Pune, this moderate 2-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
