Tikona Fort Trek

5 (5 reviews)

Overview

The Tikona Fort Trek climbs the fort named for its distinctive triangular (tikona) shape, which stands at 3,500 ft near Kamshet on the Mumbai–Pune highway. The short but steep trail passes through rocky patches and forest shade to the flat summit, which rewards you with 360-degree views of Pawna Lake, Tung Fort, Lohagad and the entire Lonavala valley. One of the most photogenic forts near Mumbai for a sunrise or day trek.

The walk begins at the base village of Tikona Peth, after a roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive from Mumbai. The trail climbs through shade-giving forest for much of the ascent before opening onto rocky stretches and a short, fun scramble near the top. At 3,500 ft, the summit is a flat grassy plateau where traces of the old fort walls still remain, and the 360-degree panorama takes in Pawna Lake, Tung Fort, Lohagad and Visapur across the valley. It is one of the few Sahyadri forts where the summit keeps its wild, uncommercialised character.

The best time to trek Tikona is from October to March, when the skies are clear and the views of Pawna Lake are at their best. During the monsoon the hill turns lush and green, though the rocks get slippery and leeches appear on the trail. With a steady climb of about four kilometres each way, breakfast and lunch included and an experienced guide leading the way, the Tikona Fort Trek is a rewarding full-day outing that suits both first-timers and regular weekend trekkers from Mumbai.

Based in Lonavala, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

How difficult is the Tikona Fort trek?

Tikona is a moderate trek. The trail is about 4 km one way with a steady climb, including one short but fun rock-scramble section near the top. Beginners with basic fitness can complete it comfortably.

How long does the Tikona Fort trek take?

The complete round trip takes about 3.5–4 hours, including summit time and a lunch break. Combined with the drive from Mumbai, the full day is roughly 6:00 am to 6:30 pm.

Is Tikona Fort trek suitable for beginners?

Yes. While it's a bit more demanding than fort treks like Karnala or Lohagad, Tikona is a great next step for beginners who have done one or two easy treks. The scramble section is short and safe with a guide.

What is the best time to trek Tikona Fort?

October to March is ideal — clear skies, pleasant temperatures and great views of Pawna Lake. Monsoon (June–September) turns the fort lush green but the rocks become slippery and the path muddy.

Can I combine Tikona Fort with other nearby treks?

Yes! Tikona is close to Tung Fort, Lohagad, Visapur and Pawna Lake camping. Many trekkers club Tikona with a Pawna lakeside camping night or visit Lohagad the same weekend.
