Korigad Fort Trek
Overview
Korigad Fort, perched at 3,000 ft near Pali village close to Lonavala, is one of the most complete and scenic forts in the Sahyadris. The moderate trail winds up through forest and rock steps to a wide flat summit ringed by intact stone ramparts, with two natural lakes and a small temple on top. With panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the Konkan coast in the distance, it's a rewarding day trek that's still delightfully uncrowded.
The fort was built in the 15th century by the Bahamani kingdom and later strengthened by the Marathas, and its five surviving gateways, underground granaries and intact bastions make it one of the best-preserved fortifications in the region. Inside the ramparts, the two summit lakes never dry up even in summer — a feat that kept the hilltop self-sufficient for centuries. A small shrine to the guardian goddess Korai Devi sits beside them, and the lakefront is a favourite lunch spot for trekkers.
The walk up is a steady but gentle climb through a shaded forest of karvi and wildflowers, with rock steps well worn by centuries of use. From the summit the view stretches across the Sahyadri range towards Lonavala, with the Konkan plains hazy in the distance. It is an ideal introduction to Sahyadri fort trekking — rewarding enough for regulars, easy enough for beginners, and always delightfully quiet compared with neighbouring forts.
Based in Lonavala, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
