Kothaligad Fort Trek

Overview

Kothaligad, also known as Peth Fort or Kothaligarh, is a compact but characterful fort perched on a hill above the Ulhas river valley near Karjat, about 90 km from Mumbai. The trail climbs from the base village of Peth through dry deciduous forest using centuries-old rock-cut steps, and in the monsoon the whole hillside turns a brilliant green, with small waterfalls spilling beside the path. It is a moderate, steady climb of about 2–3 hours that rewards you with a flat summit plateau, a small temple, water cisterns and a carved stone chamber.

The star of Kothaligad is the Titondi pinnacle — a sharp, needle-like rock that rises vertically from the fort's edge. A set of iron rungs and a ladder bolted into the rock lets confident climbers scale the final few metres to stand on top of the needle, with 360-degree views over the Karjat valley, the Ulhas river and, on clear days, the Matheran range. Climbing the pinnacle is optional — many trekkers simply enjoy the summit views from the plateau — but it is the moment that makes Kothaligad one of the most memorable short fort treks near Mumbai.

Departing early morning from Mumbai or Pune, we drive to the Peth base village, climb to the summit, spend time at the fort and the pinnacle, and return the same day. The trek is rated Moderate and suits first-time monsoon trekkers with reasonable fitness; the only slightly exposed section is the optional pinnacle climb.

Best visited in the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon months (July to October) when the forest is lush and the views are clear, Kothaligad is a classic one-day Sahyadri fort trek. Combine it with nearby forts like Peb (Vikatgad) or the Matheran range for a full weekend.

Based in Karjat, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during July, August, September, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

How do I book the Kothaligad Fort Trek?

Book directly through our website or contact us via WhatsApp. Confirm your participation at least 24 hours in advance to secure your spot.

Is this trek suitable for beginners?

Yes — Kothaligad is rated Moderate, a steady 2–3 hour climb over well-defined rock-cut steps. Only basic fitness is needed; the Titondi pinnacle climb is optional and recommended only for confident trekkers comfortable with iron rungs and exposure.

Where is Kothaligad and how do I reach it?

Kothaligad (Peth Fort) is near Karjat in Maharashtra, about 90 km from Mumbai and 140 km from Pune. We run early-morning pickups from Mumbai (Dadar, Vile Parle, Andheri, Borivali) and Pune (Shastri Nagar, FC Road, Hinjewadi) to the Peth base village.

What is the Titondi pinnacle?

Titondi is a sharp, needle-like rock that rises vertically from the edge of the Kothaligad summit. Iron rungs and a ladder bolted into the rock let you climb to the top for 360-degree views over the Karjat valley, the Ulhas river and the Matheran range. The climb is optional.

What is the best time to visit Kothaligad?

The monsoon and immediate post-monsoon months (July to October) are best — the forest is lush green, streams and small waterfalls line the trail, and the views are at their clearest.

What should I pack for the trek?

Carry a raincoat, sturdy shoes with good grip, 2 litres of water, energy snacks, a small towel and a daypack, plus a change of clothes. Avoid leather items as monsoon moisture can damage them.

Are permits included in the trek package?

Yes — the forest and local body entry charges are covered in the trek price. No additional paperwork or fees are required from participants.

Is alcohol or drugs allowed on the trek?

No, consumption of alcohol, drugs, or any intoxicating substances is strictly prohibited during the trek for safety and environmental reasons.
