Sondai Fort Trek
Overview
Sondai Fort is a small hill fort tucked into the Matheran–Karjat range, about 95 km from Mumbai. Unlike the big Sahyadri forts, Sondai is a compact, family-friendly climb that starts from the quiet village of Chouk and winds up a gentle forest trail to a tiny summit plateau. In the monsoon the slopes turn a brilliant green, and the short walk — roughly 1.5–2 hours each way — is rewarded with one of the best vantage points in the region.
The fort itself is small and mostly in ruins, but the summit opens up to sweeping views across the Ulhas river valley towards Karjat, with the Matheran range and its toy-train station visible in the distance. There are a couple of old water cisterns and the remains of the fort wall, and a short optional scramble up the rocky outcrop gives you an even wider panorama. It is a perfect second trek of the day — often combined with a visit to nearby forts or a walk through the forest below.
Departing early morning from Mumbai or Pune, we drive to the Chouk base village, trek up to the fort, spend time soaking in the views, and return the same day. The trail is easy and gradual, making it a great choice for beginners, families and anyone who wants a short Sahyadri escape without a steep grind.
Best visited in the monsoon and the cooler months (June to December), Sondai is a classic easy day trek near Karjat. Pair it with the nearby Matheran range or combine it with other small forts for a full day of exploration.
Based in Karjat, this easy 1-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October, November, December — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
