Rajmachi Fort Trek
Overview
Rajmachi (meaning "Royal Palace") is a majestic twin-fort perched on a hilltop in the Sahyadris, overlooking the Lonavala–Khandala valley. The trek passes through lush green meadows, a picturesque village called Udhewadi, and leads up to two distinct fortifications — Shrivardhan and Manaranjan — separated by a small plateau. The overnight stay in Udhewadi village, surrounded by fireflies in season and starry skies, makes this a favourite weekend escape for Mumbai trekkers.
The trek begins with a gentle hour-long walk from the base village up to Udhewadi, a hamlet of just a few families with a small temple and a handful of stone houses. Beyond the village, the trail climbs through grassland to the summit plateau, where the two forts of Shrivardhan and Manaranjan sit at opposite ends, each with its own history of Maratha watchtowers and bastions. From the top, the view sweeps across the Lonavala–Khandala valley, Pawna Lake and the Mumbai–Pune expressway winding below.
Rajmachi gets its name from the royal links of its past, and the fort complex has been a favourite for trekkers for decades. Nights here are spent in tents with a bonfire and a village-style dinner, and fireflies can be seen in the meadows through the season. A Rajmachi Fort Trek from Mumbai is the perfect balance of effort and reward — short enough for beginners, yet memorable enough for seasoned trekkers, with one of the most beautiful overnight camps in the Sahyadris. Carry a torch, warm layers and plenty of water, and the hillside is yours.
Based in Maharashtra, this moderate 2-day trek is best attempted during March, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
Is Rajmachi good for first-time campers?
Yes — it's the ideal introductory trek-camp experience. The walk is short, the camping is comfortable, and the views are stunning with minimal effort.
Can I drive to Udhewadi?
A rugged road exists but is only passable by 4x4. The 1-hr walk is more enjoyable anyway.
What is the best time for the Rajmachi Fort Trek from Mumbai?
Oct–Feb for clear skies. Monsoon transforms the landscape into a green paradise but leeches are active.
