Kavnai Fort Trek
Overview
Kavnai Fort (also spelt Kavanai) sits at 4,200 ft on the edge of the Sahyadris near Igatpuri, overlooking the Mumbai–Nashik highway. An offbeat fort that few trek groups visit, it offers a quiet forest trail, a short thrilling rock patch and a big, flat top with sweeping views of the Bhandardara and Western Ghat valleys. Perfect for trekkers looking for a fresh route away from the crowded classics.
The trek starts from the base village on the Mumbai–Nashik route and climbs steadily through deciduous forest before reaching the exposed rock patch that leads to the summit. Most trekkers complete the round trip in about three and a half to four hours, including time to explore the fort top and eat lunch with a view. October to March is the best season, when the ghat is clear and the weather is crisp; in the monsoon the trail turns lush and green but slippery, so extra care is needed on the rock patch.
Kavnai is classed as a moderate trek. The forest trail is the gentle part, while the short rock patch is the only section that demands real care, and it can be climbed with a little help from the guide. Beginners with basic fitness are welcome on clear-weather days, and the group departs Mumbai early in the morning, returning to the city by around seven in the evening. Breakfast and lunch are included in the price, along with return transport from Mumbai, the trek guide, forest entry charges and a first-aid kit.
Based in Igatpuri, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
