Kalu Waterfall Trek

4.6 (4 reviews)

Overview

Kalu Waterfall, tucked away in the Sahyadri hills, is one of the most beautiful monsoon waterfalls near Mumbai. The trail winds through dense green forest, crossing streams and small rivulets before opening up to reveal the main cascade — a multi-tiered waterfall that drops into a series of deep, clear natural pools. The trek is moderately challenging, with a steady descent into the valley and a steep climb back out, but the reward is a pristine swimming spot surrounded by towering cliffs and thick forest. This is the perfect monsoon day trek for those who want to combine a good hike with a refreshing swim in nature.

Kalu sits in the Sahyadri ranges of Maharashtra, an area known for its monsoon waterfalls that appear only during and just after the rains. Between June and October the hills turn a deep green, streams swell, and the waterfall reaches its most powerful flow. The natural pools at the base are clear and cool, perfect for a swim after the climb. Photographers find the upper tiers particularly rewarding, as the water cascades over rock ledges surrounded by mist and forest.

The trail is roughly a full-day outing, and the trek leader carries a first-aid kit and keeps the group safe around the pools, where water levels can change quickly after rain. It is best attempted with proper grip footwear and a rain jacket, as sections of the trail stay slippery through the monsoon.

Based in Maharashtra, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

What is the best time to do the Kalu Waterfall Trek?

The monsoon season (June to October) is the best time. The waterfall is at its fullest, the forest is lush green, and the streams along the trail are flowing. The trek can be done in winter too, but the waterfall will have significantly less water.

How difficult is the Kalu Waterfall Trek?

The trek is moderate. The descent into the valley is steady and the climb back out is steep. You should have reasonable fitness and be comfortable with some scrambling on uneven, slippery (in monsoon) terrain. Total walking time is about 4-5 hours.

Is swimming allowed at the waterfall?

Yes, the natural pools at the base of the waterfall are safe for swimming when the water level is moderate. During peak monsoon when the flow is very strong, swimming may be restricted for safety reasons. Your trek leader will assess conditions on the day.

Can I do this trek solo or without a guide?

The trail can be confusing in parts, especially during monsoon when foliage is dense and the path can be slippery. We strongly recommend going with an experienced local guide who knows the terrain and can ensure safety around the waterfall and pools.

What should I carry for this trek?

Trekking shoes with good grip are essential — regular sports shoes won't work on the slippery sections. Carry a rain jacket, a change of clothes, swimwear, a waterproof bag for your valuables, at least 2 litres of water, and some energy snacks.
