Tarkali & Sindhudurg from Mumbai
Overview
The Konkan coast south of Mumbai is dotted with pristine beaches, historic sea forts, and quiet fishing villages that few city-dwellers ever reach. Tarkali Beach — a long stretch of golden sand framed by swaying palms — is one of Maharashtra's cleanest and most peaceful beaches.
This 2-day trip packs in the best of the region: a ferry ride to the 17th-century Sindhudurg Fort (built by Shivaji Maharaj on an island), dolphin spotting in the open sea, and plenty of time to swim and relax at Tarkali Beach. We also visit the nearby rock pools at Achara Beach and the historic temples of Malvan.
The journey from Mumbai is a comfortable overnight train to Kudal or Sawantwadi Road, followed by a short road transfer to the coast. Fresh seafood — pomfret, crab, and squid — is the highlight of every meal.
Based in Maharashtra, this easy 2-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
How do I reach Tarkali from Mumbai?
We travel by overnight train from Mumbai to Kudal or Sawantwadi Road station, followed by a 30-40 minute drive to Tarkali Beach. The train details are shared after booking. Return is via the same route on day 2.
Is the dolphin-spotting guaranteed?
While no wildlife sighting is 100% guaranteed, dolphins are spotted on more than 90% of our trips in the waters off Tarkali and Malvan. The best sightings are in the early morning when the sea is calm. Even if dolphins don't appear, the boat ride along the Konkan coast is beautiful.
What is the best time to visit Tarkali?
October to May is ideal — the sea is calm for dolphin cruises and the weather is sunny. Monsoon (June-September) brings rough seas and the beaches are less accessible. December to February offers the most pleasant temperatures.
What seafood should I try in Malvan?
Malvan is famous for its seafood — try pomfret fry (the local specialty), crab masala, squid fry, and prawn curry. The local Malvani cuisine is known for its coconut-based curries and the iconic sol kadhi (a pink Kokum-based digestive drink served after meals).
Is there good swimming at Tarkali Beach?
Yes — Tarkali Beach has gentle waves and clean water, making it one of the safest and best swimming beaches on the Konkan coast. The beach is also relatively uncrowded compared to popular Goan beaches. Always swim within the safe zones and avoid venturing too far out.
