Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek

4.5 (5 reviews)

Overview

A Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek from Mumbai heads to one of the tallest waterfalls in India at 310 m (1,017 ft), deep inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa.

Dudhsagar — meaning "Sea of Milk" — is one of the tallest waterfalls in India at 310 m (1,017 ft). Located deep inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa, this four-tiered cascade is at its thunderous best in the post-monsoon season. The trek follows the railway tracks through a lush forest corridor, crossing multiple tunnels before the waterfall reveals itself in full glory. The combination of train-track walking, forest wildlife, and the raw power of the falls makes this an unforgettable weekend adventure.

The trail is a 12 km round trip along the railway line from Kulem, passing through several tunnels — a route that is well coordinated with the local train schedule so trekkers can walk safely. In the post-monsoon months the waterfall is at its most dramatic, thundering 310 metres down the cliff into the pool below, where you can swim and bathe after the walk. Deep inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, the forest around the tracks is home to birds, butterflies, and occasional wildlife, adding to the sense of being far from the city.

For a first taste of the waterfall, a jeep safari also runs to the base, but most travellers prefer the trek for the journey through tunnels and jungle. The trip can be combined with a South Goa beach stay, and the itinerary includes a night in a guesthouse at the base with breakfast, a guide, forest entry, and the railway permit taken care of.

Based in Goa, this moderate 2-day trek is best attempted during July, September, October, December — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
