Tirthan Valley & Jibhi Trip
Overview
A Tirthan Valley trip from Mumbai immerses you in offbeat Himachal Pradesh — quiet riverside hamlets, cedar forests, apple orchards, and the kind of peace that city-dwellers dream about.
Tirthan Valley and Jibhi represent everything that's beautiful about offbeat Himachal Pradesh — quiet riverside hamlets, cedar forests, apple orchards, and the kind of peace that city-dwellers dream about. Located on the edge of the Great Himalayan National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), this valley is perfect for travellers who want to escape the crowds of Manali and Shimla and experience authentic mountain life. Stay in charming homestays, eat home-cooked Himachali food, and fall asleep to the sound of the Tirthan River.
The Great Himalayan National Park that guards the valley's upper reaches protects snow leopards, Himalayan brown bears and the western tragopan, and its forests of deodar and walnut are among the last pristine temperate forests in the Western Himalayas. Beyond the park, the valley opens into an untouched world of hanging villages, stone-and-wood temples and trails that connect tiny hamlets like Jibhi, Bahu and Shangarh. A short walk from any homestay leads to clear river pools, waterfalls and centuries-old trade routes that once linked Kullu with Kashmir and beyond.
This is a trip for slowing down. Mornings begin with the river and a simple Himachali breakfast, afternoons are for long walks, trout fishing and exploring the Jibhi waterfall, and evenings gather around a bonfire under some of the darkest skies in India, where the air carries the crisp scent of pine and woodsmoke.
Based in Himachal Pradesh, this easy 4-day trek is best attempted during June, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
