Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

5 (5 reviews)

Overview

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL) is widely regarded as the most beautiful alpine trek in India. Over 7 days, you traverse a series of 7+ pristine alpine lakes — each a different shade of emerald, turquoise, and deep blue — set against the backdrop of the snow-capped Zanskar and Pir Panjal ranges. The trek passes through flower-laden meadows (much like the Valley of Flowers), high mountain passes, and lush pine forests. This is a bucket-list trek that belongs on every serious trekker's radar.

The route climbs through Nichinai, Gadsar, Zaj, and other passes between 3,700 and 4,100 metres, linking eight days of trekking from Sonamarg to Wangath. Camps are pitched beside Vishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, Gangbal, and Nundkol lakes, with a rest day built in at Nundkol where you can meet local Gujjar shepherds. Along the way you may spot Himalayan brown bears, musk deer, and golden marmots, and the trek ends with a visit to the 8th-century Naranag Temple before a night in Srinagar, a Dal Lake shikara ride, and the Mughal Gardens.

July and August bring the best weather and the greenest meadows, while September offers clearer skies and colder nights; nights can drop below freezing at the higher camps. The trek is graded moderate and suits trekkers with basic fitness — the longest day is around 16 km — and it is a fully supported trip with an experienced guide, cook, and support staff, plus camping equipment and porter support. It can be booked from Mumbai via Mumbai Weekenders, and we provide details on WhatsApp at 916351771180.

Based in Jammu & Kashmir, this moderate 8-day trek is best attempted during July, August, September — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
