Mcleodganj, Dharamshala & Bir Billing
Overview
This 5-day trip to Mcleodganj, Dharamshala & Bir Billing from Mumbai offers one of the most diverse short itineraries in India — Tibetan monasteries, Himalayan treks, and world-class paragliding, all within a few hours of each other.
Mcleodganj is the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. Explore the Namgyal Monastery, Bhagsu waterfall, and the bustling Tibetan markets. The Triund trek — a 9-km hike through rhododendron and oak forests to a ridgetop with jaw-dropping views of the Dhauladhar range — is one of India's most rewarding overnight treks.
Bir Billing is the paragliding capital of India, where you can tandem paraglide off a 2,400-metre hill and land in the valley below. The flight over the Himalayan foothills is an experience you'll never forget.
We travel from Mumbai by overnight train to Pathankot, then drive into the hills.
The route begins with an overnight train from Mumbai to Pathankot, then a 2.5-hour drive up into the Kangra Valley. Days are spent at the Namgyal Monastery and Tibetan Museum, at the Norbulingka Institute, and preparing for the Triund trek, before the 9-km climb to a ridgetop camp with the Dhauladhar range spread before you. After descending, you transfer to Bir and finish with a tandem paragliding flight — a 15 to 25 minute glide over the valley, with the option to skip the flight and explore the Bir Monastery instead.
The best seasons are spring and autumn, when the meadows are green and the skies are clear; summers are pleasant too, while winters close the high camp due to snow. The trip is graded moderate and suits trekkers with basic fitness — the trail is well defined, the elevation gain gradual, and a guide sets the pace. Train fare to and from Pathankot is extra, as is the paragliding flight (around ₹3,000–5,000), and booking can be done with Mumbai Weekenders on WhatsApp at 916351771180.
Based in Himachal Pradesh, this moderate 5-day trek is best attempted during March, April, May, June, September, October, November, December — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
