Overview
Nanemachi Waterfall is one of the tallest and most stunning monsoon waterfalls in Maharashtra, hidden deep in the dense forests of Mahad taluka in Raigad district, about 200 km from Mumbai. Unlike roadside waterfalls, Nanemachi requires a short walk through thick jungle from the base village of Gugulshi before the forest opens up and the waterfall comes into view — a massive 410-foot, two-stage cascade that locals call the biggest waterfall in Raigad, plunging into a blue-green pool below.
The trail to Nanemachi is surprisingly gentle — a mostly flat forest path of roughly 3–4 km round trip that takes about an hour each way, with just a short rocky scramble near the top of the pool. This makes it one of the easiest big-waterfall treks near Mumbai, ideal for beginners and families. Local legend even holds that the water has healing properties, as yogis and ascetics once did their sadhana at its base.
Departing from Mumbai/Pune overnight, we drive to Mahad and then to the Gugulshi base village, trek through the monsoon forest to the waterfall, spend time at the pool, and return the same day. When conditions allow, we also visit the nearby Saatsada waterfall on the way back.
This trip runs only in the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon months (June to October), when the waterfall is at full flow and the forest is at its greenest. It is perfect for photographers, first-time trekkers, and families looking for a quick one-day escape into the Sahyadri rainforest.
Based in Mahad, this easy 1-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
