Overview

Korlai sits at the northern mouth of the Revdanda creek, where a 16th-century Portuguese lighthouse still marks the headland. This is the quiet end of the Raigad coast - fewer camps than Alibaug, more birdlife, and a long empty beach backed by fort ruins. Our camp sits near the lighthouse so you get the sunrise over the creek and the sunset over the Arabian Sea. Two easy days: tent by the water, a walk through the Korlai fort village, and a swim when the tide allows. Transfers from Mumbai are included.

Korlai's story goes back to the 16th century, when the Portuguese built a fortress here in 1521 to guard the entrance to the Revdanda creek — the old trading gateway to Chaul, once a bustling Portuguese port. The imposing hexagonal Korlai Fort still stands on the headland, its ramparts, water channels and old inscriptions slowly reclaimed by the sea breeze, while the lighthouse on the same promontory continues to guide ships past this stretch of the Konkan coast. Today the village feels suspended in time, with the fort, the creek and the beach forming a compact, walkable loop perfect for a slow weekend.

The creek and estuary that front the campsite are a magnet for birds — herons, egrets, kingfishers and sandpipers gather along the mudflats at dawn, and the low-tide walk along the creek is the best time to spot them. It is this unhurried mix of history, birdwatching and empty beaches that makes the Korlai beach lighthouse camp a favourite for families and first-time campers who want a genuine escape from the city, barely 120 km from Mumbai.

Based in Raigad, this easy 2-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
