Lohagad & Visapur Fort Trek

5 (5 reviews)

Overview

Lohagad (Iron Fort) and Visapur — two adjacent forts perched above the scenic Lonavala region — offer one of the most accessible and rewarding treks near Mumbai. Lohagad's signature feature is its massive 1.5 km stone wall with a sweeping curve, while Visapur sits higher with trickier terrain and panoramic views of the Pawna Lake and the Western Ghats. Together, they make for a perfect half-day twin-fort conquest on a weekend.

The route starts at the base village of Bhaje, near the ancient Bhaje Caves, a set of Buddhist rock-cut cave shrines dating back over two thousand years. The climb to Lohagad's main gate is short and well-paved, making it one of the most family-friendly fort treks in the Sahyadris. At the top, the famous Vinchu Kata wall — the long curved rampart shaped like a scorpion's tail — offers sweeping views over Pawna Lake, whose waters fill the valley below with a striking blue-green colour. These caves predate the forts by centuries and reward a quick stop on the way down.

Visapur, reached from the saddle between the two hills, is the higher and wilder of the pair, with loose rock, steep sections and some of the widest panoramas in the region. On clear days you can pick out Duke's Nose and the long ridge lines of the Western Ghats stretching towards the coast. A Lohagad & Visapur Fort Trek from Mumbai is an easy, scenic and history-rich day out — ideal for first-time fort trekkers and seasoned hikers alike.
