Dandeli Hampi Trip
Overview
The Dandeli Hampi Trip flips the classic circuit — adventure first, history second. Start at Dandeli, India's white-water rafting capital on the Kali River, with Grade 3–4 rapids, jungle safaris and the natural water slide of Supyat Nala. Then drive to Hampi, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Vijayanagara Empire, and spend a full day among the boulder-strewn ruins — the Stone Chariot, the Vittala Temple and the Lotus Mahal. Same highlights as our Hampi & Dandeli trip, in the opposite order.
Dandeli sits in the Western Ghats on the banks of the Kali River, a landscape of moist deciduous forest that is home to tigers, leopards, elephants and the great hornbill. The rafting stretch runs through a deep gorge past the Syntheri Rocks, and the quieter stretches of the river are perfect for birdwatching. Hampi, across the Tungabhadra, preserves the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, which in its 16th-century heyday was one of the richest cities in the world. Its giant boulders, ancient bazaars and temples sprawl across a surreal, moonscape-like plateau.
The contrast between the two halves is what makes this trip memorable — wild jungle energy in Dandeli, silent monumental grandeur in Hampi. A coracle ride across the Tungabhadra at dusk and a sunrise climb up Matanga Hill round off the historical side, while the rafting, safari and water slide cover the adventure quota. It is a fast-moving, full-value four days that packs two very different Karnataka icons into one trip.
Based in Karnataka, this moderate 4-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
