Hampi & Badami Heritage Tour
Overview
This trip connects two of Karnataka's most remarkable heritage clusters in a single long weekend. Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire — a sprawling city of giant granite boulders, carved temples, and royal enclosures spread across a surreal boulder-strewn landscape on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. Badami, Aihole, and Pattadakal tell an earlier story — the Chalukya dynasty's rock-cut cave temples and experimental structural temples that shaped the trajectory of South Indian architecture. Between the two, you get a 360-degree view of over 600 years of Deccan heritage.
Based in Karnataka, this easy 4-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
How much walking is involved in Hampi?
Hampi is a sprawling site — you will walk 8-12 km per day across uneven terrain (boulders, sand, steps). Comfortable walking or trekking shoes are essential. Bicycles, scooters, and auto-rickshaws are available for rent to cover longer distances between site clusters.
Is it safe to climb the boulders in Hampi?
The main viewpoints like Matanga Hill and Hemakuta Hill have well-defined paths to the top. Climbing random boulders is not recommended as the granite can be deceptively smooth and unstable. Stick to the established trails, especially in the heat of the day.
What about accommodation in Hampi and Badami?
In Hampi, we stay at a guesthouse in the backpacker enclave of Hampi Bazaar or across the river in Virupapur Gaddi (the 'hippy island'). In Badami, we use a heritage hotel or a comfortable guesthouse near the cave temples. All are clean with attached bathrooms and WiFi.
Can I extend this trip to include Goa?
Yes, many travellers combine Hampi with Goa (about a 5-hour bus ride from Hampi to Panjim). If you are interested, we can customise the itinerary — let us know and we will send a modified quote with the Goa extension.
What is the food like on this trip?
Hampi and Badami both offer excellent South Indian vegetarian food — dosas, idlis, thalis, and filter coffee. Hampi also has a range of Israeli and European-style cafes catering to the international backpacker crowd. Non-vegetarian options are available in select restaurants.
