Bhutan Paro & Thimphu Trip
Overview
The Bhutan Trip from Mumbai to Paro and Thimphu takes you to the last remaining Vajrayana Buddhist kingdom in the world — a country that measures its success not by GDP but by Gross National Happiness. This pristine Himalayan nation offers a travel experience unlike any other: ancient dzongs (fortress-monasteries) perched on hillsides, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, archery as a national sport, and a government mandate that 60% of the country remains forested. The trek to Taktsang Palphug Monastery (Tiger's Nest) — clinging to a cliff 900 m above the Paro Valley — is one of the most iconic hikes in the world.
Bhutan was never colonised, and its long isolation has kept its Buddhist culture, architecture and traditions remarkably intact. Thimphu, the capital, is one of the few in the world without a single traffic light, while Paro is home to Bhutan's only international airport, where pilots thread a narrow approach between 5,500 m peaks. On this trip you will visit the Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma, the National Memorial Chorten and Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens, and drive through the terraced valleys and living villages that connect the two cities.
Every Bhutanese home, monastery and lhakhang is decorated with traditional painted motifs, and the country's policy of limiting tourist numbers through the Sustainable Development Fee keeps its valleys unspoiled. Expect cool mountain air, warm hospitality, and meals built around red rice, ema datshi and butter tea across the five days. This is a 5-day journey from Mumbai with 4 nights of hotel stay, an English-speaking guide, all monument entry fees and the Tiger's Nest trek included.
Based in Bhutan, this moderate 5-day trek is best attempted during April, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
Do Indians need a visa for Bhutan?
Yes — Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals need a visa (US$40). Other nationalities require a pre-arranged visa and pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100/day.
How hard is the Tiger's Nest trek?
It's steep but short (4 km, 900 m elevation). Most people with basic fitness can do it in 3–4 hrs up and 2 hrs down. Horses can be hired for the lower section if needed.
What is the SDF and do I need to pay it?
The Sustainable Development Fee (US$100/day for international tourists) is part of Bhutan's "high-value, low-impact" tourism policy. Indian nationals pay a lower fee (₹1,200 per day) which is included in our package.
