Dharamshala & McLeodganj Trip
Overview
A Dharamshala trip from Mumbai is anchored in McLeodganj — the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile — a hill station unlike any other in India.
McLeodganj — the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile — is unlike any other hill station in India. The air is thick with the scent of pine and incense, streets are lined with Tibetan prayer flags, and every cafe serves momos, thukpa, and butter tea alongside spectacular views of the Dhauladhar Range. Whether you're meditating at the Namgyal Monastery, trekking to Triund, or simply sipping coffee at a Bhagsu café, McLeodganj touches your soul in a way that stays long after you leave.
Dharamshala itself is the district headquarters of Kangra, set on the slopes of the Dhauladhar range at around 1,450 metres. The upper town of McLeodganj and the older Lower Dharamshala below it together make up a hill settlement that has been shaped by Tibetan settlement since the 1960s. Handmade carpets, silver jewellery, incense, thangka paintings and prayer wheels fill the bazaars, while the surrounding Kangra Valley is famous for its tea gardens and its peaceful walks — including the short hike to the Bhagsu waterfall.
A Dharamshala trip from Mumbai rewards both the explorer and the one who simply wants to slow down. The climate stays mild for much of the year, and the town works well as a base for day hikes to Triund, the Dhauladhar snowline, or longer detours towards Bir Billing and the Kangra Fort. Tibetan momos and thukpa, gentle mountain mornings, and the sight of prayer flags fluttering against the Himalayan snow line make this one of the most soulful hill station holidays in Himachal Pradesh.
Based in Himachal Pradesh, this moderate 4-day trek is best attempted during June, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
