Vasota Fort Trek from Pune & Mumbai
Overview
This Vasota Fort Trek Pune trip, run from Pune and Mumbai, climbs to a fort also known as Vyaghragad (Tiger Fort), sitting deep inside the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary in the Western Ghats. Unlike any other Maharashtra fort, reaching Vasota involves a boat ride across the Shivsagar reservoir followed by a steep, forested climb. The fort itself is in ruins, but its strategic location — perched on a cliff with the reservoir on one side and the Koyna valley on the other — is what makes it special. The trail winds through dense semi-evergreen forest typical of the Sahyadri hinterland, with bird calls, wildflower blooms (in monsoon), and the constant sense of being far from the nearest road. The summit offers one of the most dramatic views in Maharashtra: the vast expanse of Shivsagar lake ringed by forested hills.
The trek is a two-day camping expedition that departs from Pune and Mumbai on designated dates through the monsoon and post-monsoon months of July to January. From Bamnoli village on the edge of the reservoir, a boat carries you across Shivsagar to the trailhead, and the climb passes through dense forest to the base of the fort, where the group camps in dome tents for the night. The next morning the trip winds through the Kaas plateau on the way home, a landscape of grasslands that bloom with wildflowers in season.
The Vasota Fort Trek Pune package is priced at Rs.2099 and includes the boat transfer across Shivsagar reservoir, camping equipment such as dome tents, sleeping bags and mats, an experienced trek leader and forest guide, dinner on the first night and breakfast on the second, forest entry and sanctuary permits, and first-aid and safety equipment. Transport to and from Koyna and lunch on both days are not included, and pickups are arranged from Pune, Mumbai or directly at Bamnoli village. Expect a moderate trek — the initial climb from the boat landing is steep through dense forest, and the trail can be slippery in the monsoon, so good fitness and trekking experience are recommended.
Based in Maharashtra, this moderate 2-day trek is best attempted during July, August, September, October, November, December, January — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
Is the boat ride across Shivsagar reservoir on the Vasota Fort Trek Pune trip included?
Yes, the boat transfer from the Koyna dam area to the Vasota trailhead is included in the package. The boat ride itself is about 20-30 minutes and offers stunning views of the reservoir surrounded by forested hills.
How difficult is the Vasota trek?
Moderate. The initial climb from the boat landing point to the base camp is steep through dense forest. The final summit climb on Day 2 is also steep but short (about 45 minutes). Good fitness and trekking experience are recommended. The trail can be slippery in monsoon.
Is there wildlife in the Koyna Sanctuary?
Yes, Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is home to leopard, sloth bear, Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, and a rich variety of birds. Sightings are not guaranteed — the forest is dense — but the early morning climb offers the best chance. Your guide will point out tracks and signs.
What accommodation is provided on the trek?
We camp at the base of Vasota fort in dome tents. The campsite is a clearing in the forest with basic facilities. A bonfire is organised if conditions permit (the sanctuary has fire season restrictions in summer). Sleeping bags and mats are provided.
What is the best season for Vasota?
July to January is ideal. Monsoon (July-September) makes the forest lush and the waterfall active, but the trail is slippery. Post-monsoon (October-January) offers clear skies, pleasant climbing temperatures, and excellent views of Shivsagar lake from the summit.
