Prabalmachi Trek and Camping
Overview
Prabalmachi is the picturesque high plateau at the base of both Prabalgad and Kalavantin Durg, near Panvel — and the heart of this 2-day prabalmachi trek and camping experience. You climb through forest and rocky switchbacks to the grassy village plateau at 4,300 ft, set up camp with the Kalavantin pinnacle towering overhead, and wake to a sunrise over the Konkan coast. The classic gateway to two of Maharashtra's most dramatic peaks.
The climb from Thakurwadi village rises steadily through sal and karvi forest, with rocky switchbacks in the upper section and the Kalavantin pinnacle — a sheer black cone against the sky — growing larger with every step. Camp is set on the flat grassy plateau at the foot of the pinnacle, where evenings bring a bonfire, stargazing and a hearty local dinner before the night chill settles in.
The plateau is also the launch pad for two of Maharashtra's most famous forts: Kalavantin Durg above and Prabalgad across the ridge, both visible from the campsite. Most campers use the morning for a relaxed sunrise over the Konkan coast and a slow descent, with an optional short walk toward the Prabalgad base. At about 4,300 feet, Prabalmachi is one of the most scenic and accessible trek-and-camp destinations near Mumbai, and this prabalmachi trek and camping package includes return transport from Mumbai, a guide, a tent stay and all meals.
Based in Panvel, this moderate 2-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
What is Prabalmachi?
Prabalmachi is a high grassy plateau at the base of Prabalgad and Kalavantin Durg, about 4,300 ft above sea level near Panvel. It's the starting point for both forts and a beautiful camping spot in its own right.
How difficult is the Prabalmachi trek?
The trek is moderate. The climb from Thakurwadi village to Prabalmachi is around 2.5–3 hours through forest and rocky switchbacks. No technical climbing is needed, making it a great weekend trek.
What is included in the camping?
The package includes Mumbai return transport, a trek guide, tent stay with sleeping bag and mat, meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), a bonfire subject to weather, and a first-aid kit.
Can we trek to Kalavantin Durg from Prabalmachi?
Yes, Kalavantin Durg starts from the Prabalmachi plateau and the pinnacle is clearly visible from the campsite. The climb to the summit involves steep steps and some exposed sections, so it's usually done on a separate day with a guide.
What should I carry for the camping?
Comfortable trekking shoes, a warm jacket and warm clothes for the night, 2L water, snacks, a torch or headlamp, and personal medicines. The plateau gets windy and cool at night, especially in winter.
