Naneghat to Bhimashankar Range Trek

4.8 (9 reviews)

Overview

The Naneghat to Bhimashankar range trek is a three-day heritage marathon across the northern Sahyadris. It starts at Naneghat, the 2,750-ft ancient mountain pass on the Kalyan–Junnar route where Satavahana-era traders once paid their tolls, and finishes two forts and two nights later at the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple.

Day one takes you from the Naneghat pass to Jivdhan Fort — the guardian of the pass with its dramatic sheer cliffs — then down through Ghatghar village to Amboli for an overnight stay. Day two is the long forest crossing via Dhakoba Fort and Durg Fort, sleeping overnight at a base village. Day three completes the traverse to Bhimashankar through the wildlife sanctuary, where the 1,200-year-old Hemadpanthi Shiva temple stands beside the source of the Bhima river and the home of the endangered giant Indian squirrel.

This is a serious trek for fit trekkers with prior multi-day experience: long walking days, forest trails, river crossings and one of the most rewarding finishes in Maharashtra trekking. The three-day format lets you take the range slowly and soak up the forts, villages and wildlife en route.

Based in Malshej Ghat, this difficult 3-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

How difficult is the Naneghat to Bhimashankar trek?

This is a difficult, high-endurance trek with three long walking days and substantial climbs. Prior multi-day trekking experience and a strong fitness base are required.

How many days does the trek take?

The full traverse takes 3 days and 2 nights, covering the Naneghat–Jivdhan–Dhakoba–Durg–Bhimashankar route with overnight stays in village homestays.

Which forts do we see on the trek?

The route links four historic forts — Jivdhan, Dhakoba and Durg — besides the Naneghat pass itself, before finishing at the Bhimashankar temple.

What is the best time for this trek?

The post-monsoon to winter months (October to February) are best — dry trails, clear views and pleasant walking weather. Monsoon is possible but the forest sections get very slippery.

We stay in village homestays and guesthouses at Amboli and the base village near Durg Fort, with home-cooked Marathi meals provided by the host families.
