Overview
Naneghat — 'coin pass' — is a 2,600-foot mountain pass in the Western Ghats, on the border of Thane and Pune districts near Junnar, in the misty Ghatghar region along the Malshej Ghat road. For centuries it was a toll gate on the ancient trade route connecting the Konkan coast with the Deccan plateau, where traders paid coins (nane) to cross the pass (ghat). Today it is famous for two things: its history and its monsoon reverse waterfall.
The trek starts from the base village of Vaishakhare and follows a 6 km forest trail along the old trade route — a steady, well-marked climb through green jungle that takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Along the way you pass ancient Satavahana-era rock-cut caves, Brahmi inscriptions, and the huge stone pot said to have collected the toll coins. Near the top, during strong monsoon winds, the main waterfall appears to flow upward — the reverse waterfall phenomenon that draws trekkers from across Maharashtra. The summit also rewards you with sweeping views of Jivdhan Fort and the surrounding Sahyadri valleys.
Departing from Mumbai/Pune overnight, we drive to Vaishakhare, trek up to the pass, spend time at the reverse waterfall and caves, and return the same day.
This trip runs only during the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon months (June to October), when the reverse waterfall is at its most dramatic. It is perfect for photographers, history buffs, and first-time monsoon trekkers.

During heavy monsoon, strong updraft winds at the pass push the falling water back upward against gravity, making the waterfall appear to flow in reverse. It is best seen between July and September, and depends on the day's wind and rainfall.

How do I reach Naneghat?
Naneghat is about 112 km from Mumbai (2.5–3 hour drive) and about 170 km from Pune. The nearest railway station is Kalyan. We run overnight bus pickups from Mumbai and Pune, or you can drive directly to the Vaishakhare base village.
