Aadrai Jungle Trek

5 (5 reviews)

Overview

The Aadrai Jungle Trek is one of the most beautiful monsoon treks in Maharashtra — a walk straight into the rainforest of the Malshej Ghat region, a short drive from Mumbai. Hidden near Dehene village on the Murbad side of the ghat, Aadrai stays lush, green and largely unexplored even at the peak of the Sahyadri monsoon, which is exactly why trekkers love it.

The trail threads through dense forest where sunlight only filters down in patches, crossing seasonal streams and climbing to open stretches with sweeping valley views. On a clear monsoon day you can see the silver thread of the Kalu Waterfall plunging off the plateau on the far side of the valley, and the route also passes the ancient Nageshwar Temple, natural rock caves and quiet meadows that make perfect rest stops.

How to Reach Aadrai Jungle Trek from Mumbai

Getting to the Aadrai Jungle Trek from Mumbai is simple: it is about 140 km from the city, roughly a 3.5 to 4 hour drive via Kalyan, Murbad and the Malshej Ghat road. Most batches leave Mumbai late at night, reach the base village of Dehene (or Khireshwar) in the early hours, and start the forest walk after sunrise — so you are on the trail when the mist is at its best. From Pune the drive is similar in distance via Alephata and the Malshej Ghat road.

Best Time for the Aadrai Jungle Trek

The best time for the Aadrai Jungle Trek is the monsoon — June to September — when the forest is at its greenest and the streams and waterfalls are in full flow. The trek also runs in October, November, December and March–April, when the weather is clearer and cooler but the waterfalls are thinner; if you want the full rainforest experience, aim for July to early September.

Aadrai Jungle Trek Difficulty

In terms of Aadrai Jungle Trek difficulty, it is rated moderate. The walking is mostly through forest and along streams rather than a steep climb, but the trail gets muddy and slippery in the monsoon, so good trekking shoes with grip matter more than raw fitness. It is comfortable for beginners with basic fitness, first-time monsoon trekkers, nature lovers and photographers — children above 10 who are used to walking manage it well with the group.

Aadrai Jungle Trek Nearby Treks

If you want to make a weekend of the Malshej Ghat region, Aadrai pairs beautifully with its neighbours. The Kalu Waterfall trek runs through the same forests one valley over and is often combined with Aadrai on back-to-back days, and the ancient trade pass of Naneghat with its reverse waterfall is a short drive up the ghat. Between them, this corner of the Western Ghats packs in more monsoon drama than almost anywhere else within a day's reach of Mumbai.

Based in Malshej Ghat, this easy 2-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs

What makes the Aadrai Jungle Trek special compared to other monsoon treks?

Unlike the more crowded weekend routes near Mumbai, Aadrai takes you through a less-travelled forest section with dense canopy, seasonal waterfalls, and a genuine wilderness feel. It is the better pick if you want to escape the crowds and experience the jungle properly.

Is this trek suitable during monsoon?

Monsoon (June-September) is actually the best time for Aadrai — the forest is at its most vibrant, the waterfalls are active, and the canopy keeps you relatively dry. Leeches are present (wear full-length pants and carry salt), and the trail can be muddy — good shoes are essential.

How difficult is the Aadrai Jungle Trek?

Moderate. The walking is mostly through forest and along streams rather than a steep climb — the main jungle walk takes about 3 to 4 hours — but the trail gets muddy and slippery in the monsoon, so good grip shoes matter more than raw fitness. Beginners with basic fitness, first-time monsoon trekkers and children above 10 who are used to walking manage it well with the group.

What accommodation is provided?

The 2-day, 1-night itinerary includes a village stay or campsite at the base village near the trail, so you start the jungle walk fresh after an overnight rest. Breakfast, tea and a vegetarian or Jain lunch are included. The trail itself is wilderness — follow the trek leader's instructions and pack as per the things-to-carry list.

What should I specifically carry for this trek?

Good grip trekking shoes, full-length pants (for leeches in monsoon), a rain jacket, at least 2 litres of water, insect repellent, a headlamp, and a change of clothes. Pack light — you carry your own bag to the campsite.
