Kalsubai Trek
Overview
Kalsubai Trek from Mumbai & Pune takes you to the roof of Maharashtra — Kalsubai, at 1,646 m (5,400 ft), the highest peak in the state. Located in the Bhandardara region of the Sahyadris, this iconic summit draws trekkers from across the state who want to stand on the roof of Maharashtra. The trek involves a steep but well-defined trail through mountain villages, iron ladders on cliff sections, and a final ridge walk that opens up to an endless panorama of the Western Ghats. The sunrise view from the top is nothing short of spectacular.
The Kalsubai Trek from Mumbai & Pune is run as a night trek for the sunrise. Depart Mumbai or Pune at 21:00 the evening before, arriving at Bari base village around 03:30 for tea and a briefing. The climb starts at 04:00 along the Bari village route, and you reach the summit in time for the 06:30 sunrise, with far-reaching views over the Sahyadri range including the neighbouring forts. After exploring the summit and breakfast, the descent begins at 08:30, returning to Bari village for an 11:00 brunch, with an optional visit to the Bhandardara Dam before departure at 13:00.
Rated Moderate and priced at ₹999, the trek includes return transport from Mumbai or Pune, an experienced guide, breakfast and brunch, forest entry fees, and first-aid. Carry trekking shoes with excellent grip for the iron ladders, a warm jacket for the cold pre-dawn summit, a head torch, and at least 2 litres of water. Post-monsoon, from October to November, offers the clearest views, making the night climb one of the most rewarding one-day adventures near Mumbai and Pune.
Based in Maharashtra, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during February, October — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
Is Kalsubai harder than Rajgad?
Yes — Kalsubai has a steeper overall gradient and those iron ladders make it more challenging. On the Kalsubai Trek from Mumbai & Pune, it's considered the toughest of the "easy-access" Sahyadri treks.
Can you do Kalsubai in monsoon?
It's possible but very slippery on the ladders. Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) offers the best views with minimal fog.
What is the best time to start?
A night start (2–3 AM) gets you to the summit for sunrise — the most popular and rewarding option. Day treks are also possible but can get hot.
