Asherigad Fort Trek

Overview

Asherigad, also written Ashirigad, is a small but dramatic fort in the northern Sahyadris, perched on a sheer rock pinnacle above the village of Asheri near Palghar, about 110 km from Mumbai. The trek climbs from the base village through monsoon-green forest and rock-cut steps, taking about 2–3 hours to reach the summit. It is a quieter alternative to the crowded southern forts, with far fewer trekkers even at the peak of the rains.

The fort's signature is its location — it sits above the Kadelot, a deep, narrow gorge where a stream cuts between Asherigad and the neighbouring hills and drops as a waterfall in the monsoon. From the edge of the fort you look straight down into this ravine, and across the coastal plains towards the Arabian Sea. The summit itself is compact: an entrance gate, a large natural cave that doubles as a shelter, old water cisterns, and panoramic viewpoints that make it one of the most photogenic small forts near Mumbai.

Departing early morning from Mumbai or Pune, we drive to the Asheri base village, trek up to the fort, spend time at the summit, the cave and the gorge viewpoints, and return the same day. The climb is moderate with a few steeper rock-cut sections, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed, though no prior trekking experience is required.

Best visited in the monsoon and post-monsoon months (June to December) when the gorge waterfall is flowing and the forest is at its greenest, Asherigad is a classic one-day fort trek near Mumbai. Pair it with nearby forts or the Palghar coast for a full weekend.

Based in Palghar, this moderate 1-day trek is best attempted during June, July, August, September, October, November, December — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
