Hampi Gokarna Trip
Overview
This 4-day trip pairs the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire with the wild serenity of the Arabian Sea. Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds the boulder-strewn ruins of one of the largest empires of the medieval world — the Stone Chariot, the Vittala Temple, the Lotus Mahal and more. Then it's on to Gokarna, where the hippie trail meets temple town vibes, with its crescent beaches and the sacred Om Beach. History and beach life rolled into one unforgettable road trip.
Hampi's extraordinary landscape of giant granite boulders and palm-fringed Tungabhadra riverbanks made it the natural capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, which reached its peak in the 16th century before the city was abandoned. Today the ruins are a breathtaking open-air museum — a 4,000-strong cluster of temples, royal pavilions, markets and water structures that attracts history lovers and photographers from around the world. The Tungabhadra river, still sacred and serene, runs through the heart of the site, where coracle rides and riverside sunsets have become a ritual of any Hampi visit.
Gokarna, by contrast, is all about slow coastal living. Its string of crescent beaches — Gokarna Main, Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise — are connected by a scenic cliff-and-forest trail, and the town's Mahabaleshwar Temple, home to the Atmalinga, draws pilgrims throughout the year. Karnataka's coastline is among India's most unspoiled, and this Hampi Gokarna trip balances temple-hopping with beach time, river crossings and even a Kali River rafting session, all wrapped into one easy four-day escape from Mumbai.
Based in Karnataka, this easy 4-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.
