Bandhavgarh Tiger Safari from Mumbai
Overview
Bandhavgarh National Park, located in Madhya Pradesh's Vindhya Hills, has the highest density of Bengal tigers in India — it's the park that put tiger safaris on the global map. The park is centred around the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort (2,000+ years old), which towers over the surrounding forests and provides a dramatic backdrop for game drives.
This 4-day trip includes three full safaris in different zones of the park, a visit to the historic Bandhavgarh Fort, and a night at a jungle lodge with expert naturalists. The park is also rich in other wildlife — leopards, nilgai, chital, sambar, and over 250 bird species.
We travel from Mumbai by overnight train to Katni or Jabalpur, followed by a scenic drive to the park.
Based in Madhya Pradesh, this easy 4-day trek is best attempted during October, November, December, January, February, March, April — when the trail and surroundings are at their most rewarding.

FAQs
How do I reach Bandhavgarh from Mumbai?
We travel by overnight train from Mumbai to Katni or Jabalpur, followed by a 2-3 hour drive to the jungle lodge near Bandhavgarh's Tala Gate. Return is via the same route.
How does Bandhavgarh compare to Tadoba?
Both are excellent parks. Bandhavgarh has a higher tiger density and the iconic fort inside the park. Tadoba has more diverse landscapes and is closer to Mumbai (trains to Chandrapur). If you can do both, do Tadoba first (easier), then tackle Bandhavgarh for a deeper wildlife experience.
What are the safari timings?
Morning safaris start at 5:30 AM (entry at sunrise) and last 3-4 hours. Afternoon safaris start at 2:30 PM and go till sunset. Early morning is the best time for tiger sightings — we do two morning safaris and one afternoon.
Can I see the Bandhavgarh Fort?
Yes — the fort is inside the reserve and can be visited during a dedicated slot. The fort is 2,000+ years old with ancient caves, inscriptions, and a 10th-century Vishnu idol. The panoramic view of the reserve from the fort is spectacular.
What photography gear should I bring?
A DSLR/mirrorless with a 200-400mm zoom lens is ideal for tiger photography. A 70-200mm lens works well for birds and deer. A beanbag or small tripod for the gypsy is useful. Keep extra memory cards and batteries — cold morning drives drain batteries faster.
